It’s where you buy shares into crops, and in return, you reap the rewards, consisting of fresh vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a “membership” or a “subscription”) and, in return, receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.
This arrangement creates several rewards for both the farmer and the consumer. In brief:
Advantages for farmers:
Get to spend time marketing the food early in the year, before their 16-hour days in the field begin
Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm’s cash flow
Have an opportunity to get to know the people who eat the food they grow
Advantages for consumers:
Eat ultra-fresh food with all the flavor and vitamin benefits
Get exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking
Usually get to visit the farm at least once a season
Find that kids typically favor food from “their” farm – even veggies they’ve never been known to eat
Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows their food and learns more about how food is grown
An important concept woven into the CSA model takes the arrangement beyond the usual commercial transaction. That is the notion of shared risk: in most CSAs, members pay upfront for the whole season, and the farmers do their best to provide an abundant box of produce each week. If things are slim, members aren’t typically reimbursed. The result is a feeling of “we’re in this together.” Promoting well-being through food and farming and community.
Important Information regarding CSAs- Half of the cost of the CSA is to be sent in with the registration. The other half will be due at your first pick-up. The shareholder is responsible for washing the box your produce came in and return it for a new one at the next pick-up. The shareholder and I will agree upon all scheduled pick-up times.
We limit participation to only ten shares per season this year, so get your registration early. Returning shareholders will get priority.
We will run three CSAs throughout the season. We also offer an egg add-on. These are farm fresh unwashed eggs.
Early Spring CSA: These boxes will consist mainly of greens. Spring boxes will run for five weeks for $100. You must pay half of the amount at registration and the remaining half when you pick up your item for the first time. You can send your registration with a check or money order to the address below.
Spring and Summer CSA: This will be comprised of various vegetables grown throughout the season. These boxes will have a variety of vegetables and herbs and run for six weeks. The cost per share will be 180.00, half at registration and the other half due at first pick up.
Summer fall end-of-season vegetables CSA: These boxes will have a variety of vegetables and herbs and run for ten weeks. The first container will be supplied and ready to go when you arrive. The cost per share will be 300.00, half at registration and the other half due at first pick up.
I will offer a variety of boxes (when available) between running CSAs Notifications of these opportunities will be sent out via email.
